Ultra-Fast Germanium Photodiode
Scientists under the leadership of the Leibniz IHP have succeeded in producing a waveguide-coupled germanium photodiode by means of a novel device concept, surpassing for the first time the bandwidths of InP-based photodiodes.
This could really address the increasing demand for speed in data transmission, as the realization in a silicon-compatible material system makes it possible in the future to manufacture high-performance, electro-photonic systems cost-efficiently and in large quantities.
